Lucas Stephens is a Mellon/ACLS Public Fellow at the Environmental Law and Policy Center and a Research Affiliate at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in the department of archaeology. He studies land use, transportation, agriculture, and urbanism both in the distant past and the present. He led the ArchaeGLOBE Project (2018-19), a "massively collaborative" effort to synthesize archaeological knowledge on global land use over the past 10,000 years. His current research focuses on sustainable urban mobility and algal blooms in the Great Lakes. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Ph.D. in the Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World in 2018, where he studied route networks, settlement patterns, and human-environment interactions in the landscape surrounding the Iron Age city of Gordion in central Turkey.
